The City of Covington’s Parks and Recreation Department is now open for registration for Spring & Summer classes. Programs will run from April-August. Astronomy and Nature
Covington Community Park Star Party
Sail the Milky Way with local astronomers who will provide stargazing expertise and access to telescopes, binoculars and star charts. Explore the Moon, planets, constellations, stars, clusters and galaxies that each season’s nightscape presents.

Dress warmly and bring a small flashlight (red filters are provided).Children with parental supervision are welcome as astronomers will bring the stars alive for small ones. Inclement, cloudy weather may cause cancellation. Star Parties are free and open to the public at Covington Community Park. Cancellations will be posted at the Seattle Astronomical Society website at www.seattleastro.org. Otherwise look to the sky before you come.
To the natives, everything in nature had a use. Learn the indigenous peoples’ medicinal, food, clothing, shelter, tool and houseware uses of the plants living around you. The walk will begin in the maintenance lot at 24810 148th Ave SE in Kent.
Join Friends of Soos Creek Park volunteer guides as they lead you on an interpretive walk looking and listening for over 100 species of birds including the great horned owl, pileated woodpecker and wood duck. The walk will begin at Gary Grant Park at SE 208th St. and 137th St. SE.

Safe at Home
This two-hour course is designed for children ages 8-12 to learn about potential dangers when home alone. Learn how to be responsible and safe in any situation. We cover family communication, first aid, internet, gun, phone, fire and door safety.
Boys and girls, come for a day of fun while earning your Super Sitters Certificate. This class will cover leadership, the business of babysitting, basic care for children,understanding children of different age groups, safety and first aid. Bring a sack lunch and snack to class.
GROUP GUITAR LESSONS *NEW*
Dust off that guitar sitting in your closet or borrow one because its time to learn how to play in a fun group setting (max five students per group). In this 10-week session you will learn basic chords, major and minor scales, and alternative picking. You are bound to enjoy numerous aha moments as the class combines hands-on training with just enough music theory to understand why it all works. You will end the course knowing how to play a handful of contemporary pop songs with the ability to learn an unlimited number of songs in the future. A onetime materials fee of $20 is to be paid to the instructor for a workbook.
PAJAMA STORY TIME *NEW*
This class is targeted towards young children ages 2-6 and their parents. Come listen to several age-appropriate stories, sing songs, and, best of all, make your own fun Origami project each evening while in your pajamas! Children must be accompanied by an adult. This activity takes place in the Polaris Apartments.

CHEETAH AFTER SCHOOL ART
Join us each early release Wednesday for creative art time. Bring your imagination and love for art! We will create a new project each week. Register early as this class does fill up quickly! This class is only available for Cedar Valley Elementary School students.
AFTER SCHOOL PAPER ENGINEERING
In this one-hour class, you will make at least two fun paper engineered projects on early release Wednesdays. Paper engineering is a great way to visualize shapes, follow directions and build math, interpersonal and fine motor skills.
KIDS IN THE KITCHEN: MOTHER’S DAY COOKIES
Students will make delicious heart shaped peanut butter cookies that will be decorated elegantly with white dipping chocolate. Fun packaging will also be provided if students would like to give them as a gift for Mother’s Day. Students will receive recipes as well as the skills to bake and decorate cookies. Everything they make they take home!
DADDY DAUGHTER SPRING FLING
Fathers and daughters come and enjoy our fourth annual event! All ages are welcome! Join us for a fun-filled evening of dancing, food and prizes. Grandpas, uncles and big brothers are also welcome.

Starlight Studios Performing Arts offers tap, jazz and ballet classes for children ages 3-12. Classes are taught by Kara Hill who has 20 years of dance teaching experience and loves bringing music and movement together to share with young dancers.
TWINKLE TOES: PRE-BALLET & TAP - 3-5 years
Your blossoming dancer will have so much fun learning the basics of pre-ballet and tap dance in this class. Body awareness, concepts of music and rhythm, coordination and beginning terminology will all be introduced in a nurturing environment. Required attire is leotards, tights, ballet slippers and tap shoes.
DANCE COMBO LEVEL 1 - 5-7 years
Young dancers will explore the wonder of dance in this ballet, tap and jazz combination class. Dancers will learn foundational ballet technique, upbeat tap rhythm and sequences and energetic jazz routines as well as foster a love of movement, music and self-expression. Required attire is leotards, tights, ballet slippers and tap shoes.
DANCE COMBO LEVEL 2 - 8-12 years
This intermediate level combination class will immerse your dancer in the joys of ballet, tap and jazz. With graceful ballet numbers, exciting tap sequences and dynamic jazz combinations, students will expand their minds and develop coordination and style. Dancers will learn how to leap higher, spin tighter and express themselves with finesse and precision. Required attire is leotards, tights, ballet slippers and tap shoes.

KIDS BEGINNER KARATE I
This class is an ongoing introduction to self-defense for children. Students will receive step-by-step instruction in the basics of karate. Warm-up exercises will increase fitness and flexibility and practices will teach fundamental karate skills that develop confidence and positive personal growth. Students may also participate in an optional Saturday drop-in practice at 10 a.m. There is a one-time uniform fee of $40 due to the instructor on the first day of class.
KIDS BEGINNER KARATE II
This class is a continuation for students who have completed the intro class and will expand on the skills and exercises learned there.
Have fun while building stamina and coordination on the ninja obstacle course. This class will focus on core strength, body control, teamwork, team challenges and basic tumbling skills. Classes are held at South Elite All Stars at 1222 6th Ave N in Kent.
CIRCUS ARTS CLASSES
Have you ever wanted to walk a tightwire or learn how to juggle? Covington Parks and Recreation and Synapse Circus Center have teamed up to provide you with the chance! In Circus Arts you can learn the basics of all sorts of amazing skills including balance, acrobatics, object manipulation and so much more. Handstands, low tightwire and ball walking are used to teach different types of balance. Acrobatics and human pyramids train students to jump and use momentum. Juggling, object balancing and Chinese Yo-Yo are used in object manipulation. No previous experience is needed. Students will get to demonstrate their new skills at the End of Session Show on the last day. Students are encouraged to wear comfortable, stretchy clothes that allow for full range of movement and are not too baggy. Please do not wear clothing with zippers or buckles as it damages equipment. Students may go barefoot or wear socks or gym/ballet shoes.
Kidz Love Soccer
This program provides kids with a positive framework where all players are nurtured, built up and developed as young athletes. A typical class includes activities like warm-ups, skill introductions, games and scrimmages conducted in a non-competitive, recreational format. All participants will receive a Kidz Love Soccer jersey!
MOMMY/DADDY & ME SOCCER
As you and your child participate in fun, age-appropriate activities, your child will develop their large motor and socializing skills. The fun happens on the field and parents are a part of the action!
TOT & PRE-SOCCER
Enjoy running and kicking just like the big kids! Participants will learn basic techniques while building self-esteem and learning to follow instructions in a nurturing teaching environment. Shin guards are required after the first meeting.
SOCCER 1: TECHNIQUES & TEAMWORK
Players will learn how to dribble, pass, play defense and shoot goals! Fun skill games are played at every session and small-sided soccer matches will be introduced gradually. Shin guards are required after the first meeting.

GROSS OUT SCIENCE ACADEMY
Yuck! If you like all things gross, squishy and electrifying, come to this camp full of XL bubbles, magnetic slime, fuzzy molds and fizzing chemical reactions. You will discover the science behind weird and gross bodily functions and see your belly button bacteria! Conducting bizarre experiments is welcome! It will be a hands-on journey into the science and biotechnology of plain gross!
SPRING BREAK SOCCER CAMP
Spend Spring Break playing soccer with us at Covington Community Park. Each day we will practice skills such as dribbling, shooting, passing, receiving and more. All skill levels are welcome. We will end the day with a scrimmage and fun games. Each participant will receive a camp t-shirt. Please dress for the weather and bring a lunch, snack and water bottle. Shin guards are required.
EBI SPRING BASKETBALL CLINIC
This is a youth and middle school camp that mainly focuses on developing ball control. EBI will help develop your child’s ball handling, footwork, athleticism, character and other essential skills to become a great ball handler. Your player will practice the skills they learn and apply them in a controlled game setting.
Summer Sports Camps & Clinics
XTREME SPEED CLINIC
This clinic will teach proper sprinting mechanics and speed development in a one-on-one or small group setting. Campers will receive hands-on teaching on how to properly run and develop speed to apply to all sports. This clinic is run by Rob Thomas, President of Xtreme Speed Track Club and head track and field coach at Kentwood H.S., with other USATF-certified track and field coaches and nationally ranked athletes. This clinic will help all athletes develop speed for their upcoming seasonal sports. Each participant will receive an Xtreme Speed t-shirt.
KENTWOOD TRACK CAMP
The Camp will teach participants the basic components of track and field. Campers are exposed to all event areas and will have multiple opportunities to learn and practice. Camp is run by Rob Thomas, head track and Field coach at Kentwood H.S., as well as assistant coaches and current and former Kentwood athletes. Parents are encouraged to come Thursday for the track meet. Register by June 30 to guarantee a camp t-shirt. Snacks will be provided.
STEVE GOUCHER PRO BASEBALL CAMP *NEW*
This youth baseball camp is well suited for all players, from aspiring to elite. Instructor Steve Goucher is a former professional baseball player and Atlanta Braves scout. Steve has over 15 years of experience instructing baseball at all levels. Many of his students have gone on to play college baseball and a few even made it to the big leagues. Advanced registration is required.

Do you want to create video games? This is an introductory course for young students who want to learn how to build simple video games. WEB DESIGN & DEVELOPMENT CAMP
This course is an in-depth look at the world of web design and development. Students enrolled in this session will learn how to build their own website from start to finish using an award-winning suite of products. The learning for this camp does not end at the door as students will have access to their website with free hosting for one year.
VIDEO GAME DESIGN CAMP
This course provides students with a fun interactive look at the world of video game design and development. Students enrolled in this camp will learn the basics of video game design and produce several interactive video games to share with their friends and family.
This course offers younger students a fun, interactive look at coding. Students will create virtual apps and write their own programs they can share with friends and family. This course makes learning to code fun and explores problem solving and programming logic. Students will have access to their accounts so the learning does not end at the door. **Students should be able to read prior to this course.
MOVIE MAKERS CAMP
This hands-on, interactive course will instruct students on the world of digital video design and production. Students will film, direct and edit their own digital video cartoons. Students enrolled in this course will amaze their peers with green screen and special effects work.
APPLICATION DESIGN CAMP
This class offers students a hands-on look at the world of application design and development. This interactive course will instruct students about the design and development of applications. Students will design their own app which can be shared with friends and family members with an Apple or Android device.
CARTOON CREATORS CAMP
Do you like cartoons? This is a perfect class for the student with a big imagination who wants to learn how to make their own cartoons and digital creations. This course will teach students how to build digital comics they can share with friends and family.
THE GAMING ACADEMY
The gaming academy is an all-day course for students who love games. During this course, students will be immersed in the world of 2D and 3D game design. The gaming academy is a combination of our Video Game Design, Advanced Game Design and 3D Game Design courses. The course offers students a variety of hands-on experience designing and building their very own games. Students are encouraged to bring a sack lunch.

Dance Summer Camps
SUMMER DANCE CAMP
Come enjoy three days full of fun, music and dancing! Dancers will learn how to properly execute dance technique, skills, tricks and cute dance routines. We will include a variety of genres such as ballet, jazz, pom and hip-hop. A camp t-shirt will be included. Parents are invited for a dance showcase on Thursday from 1:30-2 p.m.
Camp Adventure Day Camp
Join us for this week-long adventure featuring a new activity each day!
DAY 1 - Northwest Trek
On day one we head out to Eatonville to explore 435 acres of stunning meadows and forests at Northwest Trek. We will see massive predators like black bears, wolves, cougars, foxes and other Northwest native animals in naturalistic exhibits. We will end the day with an awesome team competition.
DAY 2 - Lake Sammamish State Park.
After beautifying the park we’ll tour the lake by kayak as we learn about wildlife in the area. To end the day you can swim, paddle board, play Frisbee or volleyball, or just relax and enjoy the beach.
DAY 3 - Black Diamond Park
Try your hand at shooting BB’s, playing gaga ball, riding drift trikes and taking a Leap of Faith! We will eat s’mores, swim in the pool and end the day with hilarious team skits.
DAY 4 - Dash Point State Park
At Dash Point we will explore the trails and play on the beach. You can skim board, search for starfish and crabs or build a sand castle. We will play Capture the Flag and end the day with a photo scavenger hunt.
DAY 5 - Issaquah
Our last day of Camp Adventure takes us to Issaquah where we will hike Poo Poo Point. After our hike we will pick fresh berries. We will bring our berries back to City Hall where we will learn how to cook and get ready for our party where families can join us for games and a slideshow from 4-5 p.m. to celebrate our awesome week!
Fitness, Classes & Events
This classes is designed for those wanting an exercise program that is fun, safe and fuctional. The class is designed for people over 55 but is also great for any beginner or exercise fanatic who has been injured or is recovering from injury. This is a LOW IMPACT class with fun international music and easy dance routines.
TEEN/ADULT BEGINNER KARATE

Give yourself a weekly creativity break! In this two-week class you will learn a variety of unique greeting card techniques ranging from die cuts to Origami, quilling, stamping and iris folding. You will make several greeting cards using a mixture of techniques each week perfect for all spring occasions including graduation, thank you’s, Father’s Day, Easter and more.
